Families Enjoy the Anacapa Math Fair
The 18th Annual Anacapa Math Fair on November 21 included some reasonably easy and some challenging problems, some very welcome special guests, and fantastic prizes. A great group of students, parents, teachers, siblings and friends joined in the evening’s celebration of the sometimes overlooked quality of fun and play that can be found in math.
A problem involving a Morse code puzzle seemed to be the one that many people would not give up on, but there were several almost perfect (and one perfect) estimate of the number of peanut butter pretzels contained in the jar. The oral problem was solved by Mehrdad, an astute dad who has attended the Math Fair eight times with his two daughters, proving that perseverance can bring success.
It was wonderful to see four alums from the Class 2011—Brenda, Aubrey, Wishiah and Dylan—who were able to share adventures from the first months of college and catch up with their Anacapa fans.
Many thanks to Bryan & Rachid who teach math to all the students, to all of the donors of the great prizes, to the students who helped set up and manage the problem stations, and the parents who helped set and clean up. For those of you who like to plan your calendars, the 19th Annual Anacapa Math Fair will be held on the Monday before Thanksgiving, 2012, and we hope to see you there!
