A.P. English Visits Lit Society

On January 20, nine Anacapa advanced placement English students and their teacher Peggy Lauer recently had the wonderful opportunity of attending The Santa Barbara Literary Society luncheon as guests of Northern Trust which has sponsored a group of Anacapa students at one luncheon per year for the last several years.  This year the featured speaker was Paula McClain, author of The Paris Wife, a best-selling historical novel about Ernest Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley Richardson.  Before the luncheon itself, Peggy and her students had the rare chance of having the author all to themselves for an hour.

As usual, students asked exceptionally good questions and enjoyed their conversation with Ms McClain.  They inquired about the process of writing a book and getting it published.  They were also interested in what motivated Ms McClain to choose the topic she did and how she researched the lives of Hemingway and Hadley Richardson before she started writing.  At the luncheon, the students were seated at several tables so some of the members of the Society could get to know them.  The whole occasion was very successful and the students added to their knowledge of language, literature, and writing.
